Nurses and CNA’s spend a tremendous amount of time and effort repositioning the patients who are in their care. Whether they need to roll the patient on their side, place a sling under them to use with a transfer machine, bring them back to the head of the bed, or simply to change bed linens, patient caregivers work hard—and many careers have been cut unnecessarily short as a result of injuries which occurred while carrying out their tasks.
Why is patient repositioning such a universal problem? The answer is “Compression force”, which is the amount of pressure that is being put on your lower back every time you need to move a person (or even inanimate objects).
For instance, if you have a 100 lb patient lying in bed and you are going to reach over and grab them, and roll them towards you, th e amount of compression force pressure that’s being put on your lower back is 1,002 lbs. force.
If you have a 150 lb patient the pressure goes up to 1,314 lbs of compression force pressure.
Someone who weighs 250 lbs (not unusual anymore) would put 2,024 lbs of compression force pressure on your lower back.
Compression force pressure is accumulative. Many times, under this tremendous pressure, micro tears and micro fractures can occur. These do not heal before you have to move the patient/ loved one again, and can get a little worse each time the pressure is reapplied. OSHA and NIOSH report that a nurse will put 1.8 tons of compression force pressure on their back during a single, 8-hour shift. CNA’s do even more.
Even with the help of mechanical devices available to aid you with transferring, you have to roll the patient over to put the sling in place, which makes you vulnerable to injury before you even transfer the person!
So how do we take care of our patients and ourselves, too? An exciting and innovative product is available now to take the back pain out of patient repositioning. This tool allows the smallest staff member to boost, turn, reposition, change the bed linens, and place a sling for mechanical transfers under a patient of up to 1,000 lbs, effortlessly, by themselves! There is nothing else on the market that can even come close to what this amazing product can do.
